De La Salle
Bronze, July 1995Bruce Wolfe has been creating life sized bronze portraits since 1967 and recently has unveiled several heroic sized pieces.
When St. Mary's College in Moraga, California, needed a focal point in front of the campus, they asked Wolfe to create a piece honoring St. John Baptist De La Salle, the first teaching Christian brother. He researched his clothing, found in a museum in Italy, and with paintings of him, then sculpted a 10 1/2 foot portrait which was then made into bronze. He also designed the classic base of white ceramic tiles to fit in with the college architecture.
The sons of T. Jack Foster, wanted to honor their father who was the founder of Foster City, California. They came to Wolfe with old photographs and he was inspired to create the 8' bronze which is in the Foster City Civic Center. He used a model for the body and also did a portrait of one of T. Jack sons, which helped give the remarkable likeness of the father.
Other clients have come to Wolfe wanting to have a likeness of their heroes or to have a permanent portrait of someone important to them. Some subjects have been sculpted from photographs, such as the late Steve Silver, the creator of the Beach Blanket Babylon Play in San Francisco, or Ben Kalberer, a philanthropist from North Dakota. Others, such as George Shultz, the former Secretary of State or Maestro Kurt Herbert Adler, of the San Francisco Opera, or Brother Mel Anderson, President of St. Mary's College, have modeled while Bruce sculpts in clay, which the Artworks Foundry then transforms into bronze.
