Vatican 1451 Collection

Artist Lorriane Vail's collection of animals for the Vatican 1451 collection interprets Petrus Candidus' 15th century illuminated manuscript of animals, the Urbino Latini 276, now preserved in the Vatican Library. Her Rhino embodies the majesty of this ancient beast, whereas her rendition of Candidus' crocodile is mischievous. Her interpretation of this prehistoric beast captures two crocodiles "intertwined" in a blissful, if not boisterous, frolic. She brings to life Candidus' illustrated crocodile peering playfully with a teasing smile.  Other works in Vail's bronze series include Elephants, Lizard and Chameleon, and Horned Toads.
